Key Takeaways

  • Valve says Steam Machine and Steam Frame remain on track for summer 2026 despite AI-driven DRAM and NAND price spikes straining supply chains.
  • Steam Machine dev kits are not currently available to developers; studios are instructed to use Steam Deck as the closest compatibility proxy
  • The expanded Steam Verified program launched on June 4, categorising game compatibility across Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame simultaneously
  • PC Gamer hardware editor Jacob Ridley raised his Steam Machine price estimate from $529 to about $899 in February 2026, three months ago.

Anyone expecting Valve to shelve its living-room PC ambitions amid a hostile hardware market will be disappointed.

On June 4, 2026, Valve confirmed in an official Steam post that both Steam Machine and Steam Frame remain on track for a summer launch, while expanding its Verified compatibility program, effective immediately, across all three Valve hardware products.

The announcement reflects Valve’s characteristic low-key confidence, despite navigating the same component shortages and pricing pressures that have driven Nintendo Switch 2 hardware costs.

No Dev Kits, No Firm Price, No Delay

The expanded Steam Verified program now classifies games across Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame, rating titles by performance on Valve hardware and compatibility with Proton, the Linux-based compatibility layer for Windows games.

It sets performance expectations before either device has shipped.

Steam Machine dev kits are not available, so Valve tells developers to use Steam Deck testing instead, since Deck compatibility is expected to carry over to Steam Machine. Steam Frame dev kits are already in select developers’ hands.

This suggests tight hardware allocation amid AI-driven memory price surges affecting production.

In May, Valve’s Lawrence Yang told PC Gamer that rising AI-driven demand for components like memory is unavoidable and will affect nearly all Valve hardware production, making it difficult to keep costs low while maintaining competitive pricing.

What to Expect From the Steam Machine This Summer

Valve’s hardware roadmap positions Steam Machine as a compact living-room PC running SteamOS, targeting most Steam titles at 4K 60 fps with FSR upscaling.

It will launch alongside a redesigned Steam Controller and Steam Frame, a display-connected device aimed at a different use case than the full Machine.

PC Gamer hardware editor Jacob Ridley revised his Steam Machine estimate from $529 for the 512GB model in late 2025 to about $899 by February 2026, three months before today’s announcement and ahead of further component cost pressures.

A Steam update has also suggested four Steam Machine models and a reservation system, though Valve has not confirmed SKUs or pricing. The summer 2026 release window remains unchanged, even amid ongoing supply constraints.
