Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft officially delayed Playground Games’ Fable reboot from Fall 2026 to February 2027, confirmed via an Xbox post on X on May 29, 2026
  • Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty stated the game is “in great shape” but needs “a window all to its own” rather than competing in a historically stacked Q4 calendar
  • Grand Theft Auto VI (November 19), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (October 23), Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Gears of War: E-Day all occupy the same holiday window that Fable would have entered
  • A major new look at Fable will be shown at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026, the game still launches on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC via Steam and Game Pass

Microsoft blinked. After weeks of speculation and a pointed denial from the official Fable account just last month, Xbox confirmed on May 29 what Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb had been reporting for weeks.

Playground Games’ Fable reboot is moving from its fall 2026 release window to February 2027. Xbox said the delay will give the game “the dedicated moment it deserves” rather than launching it into one of gaming’s most competitive holiday release windows.

The reasoning is candid to a degree that is rare for a major publisher, and the decision was almost certainly inevitable the moment GTA VI was locked in November 19 as an immovable date.

Why the Holiday Window Was Impossible

Xbox openly acknowledged the crowded release schedule.

In its announcement on X, the company noted that Fable would have launched alongside Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Grand Theft Auto VI between October and November 2026.

The delay also validates reporting from Jeff Grubb, who said Microsoft was concerned about Fable competing with GTA VI, despite the official Fable account publicly denying that claim last month.

On the Xbox Podcast, Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty said, “The game is in great shape. The team feels really good. We’re excited about where the game is. We want to make sure that that game has a window all to its own, so we are going to move it from this fall to February.”

The move shifts Fable away from both GTA VI and Xbox’s cheaper but crowded, first-party lineup, giving the reboot a clearer launch window in February 2027.

Fable’s Long Road to Release

This marks the second official delay for Playground Games’ Fable reboot. Announced in July 2020, the game was originally targeting 2025 before slipping to 2026, then fall 2026, and now February 2027, more than six and a half years after its reveal.

The delay also comes as GTA VI continues to dominate industry attention, with ongoing speculation that Rockstar could price the game as high as $100.

If true, that could heavily influence spending across the holiday season and further justify Microsoft’s decision to avoid the crowded Q4 window.

Why February 2027 Makes More Sense

Fable is set to launch on PS5 alongside Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, while also joining Game Pass Ultimate. It will be the first major Microsoft first-party title to launch simultaneously on PlayStation following Xbox’s multiplatform push.

A February 2027 release gives Fable room to establish itself on PS5, where the franchise lacks the same recognition it enjoys among Xbox players.

It also avoids direct competition with GTA VI and a packed holiday lineup that already includes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is scheduled to release this October.

Microsoft will showcase Fable again during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026. According to Matt Booty, the game is in strong shape, making the delay look less like a setback and more like a strategic release decision.
