The Sony WH1000XM4 has finally launched. Its predecessor, the Sony WH1000XM3 headphones, stole the market and we have been waiting for its successor ever since. Now Sony has released new and improved headphones that add multi-point connections through aptX. The Sony WH1000XM4 offers great noise cancellation and superior sound quality, all in a weightless and comfortable design.
While not much different from their ancestors, a lot of new features include multipoint pairing, ultra-high DSEE expansion, conversation recognition, and sensor-aware auto play/pause. Sony WH1000XM4 was launched on August 6, 2020, and is currently Sony’s flagship headset, surpassing the mid-range Sony WHCH710N and truly wireless Sony WF1000XM3. When it comes to price, Sony has never let us down on this one.
- Price: $ 349, in the US
- Price: £ 349 in the UK
- Price: AU $ 549 in AU
Although the Sony WH100XM4 has added a bunch of new parts inside the headphones, in terms of aesthetics, there isn’t much difference between them and their ancestors. If we talk about its material, high-quality plastic with synthetic leather is used. The result is a product that appears to be the most durable while still being extremely comfortable to wear over long periods of time. A few more points are:
- Notable design changes to the 1000XM3
- Strong construction and comfortable padding
- New SoC for improved noise cancellation
- No water resistance
However, magic happens inside the headphones. Sony has replaced its old system chip (SoC) with a new one that provides better noise cancellation.

Characteristics of Sony WH100XM4
The Sony WH1000XM3 has been feature-rich from the beginning, equipped with user-friendly control circuits and great noise canceling applications. All the good things about the WH1000XM3 headphones carry over to the new WH1000XM4 successors with some brand new tricks.
The Sony headset plays a small ringtone when you approach one of the preset locations and dial up or down the noise-canceling dial accordingly.
However, the best features of the WH1000XM4 are those that are tuned for comfort. These are the easiest and effective additional features. A sensor on the headset recognizes when you remove the headset and pauses music playback accordingly, automatically resuming playback when replaced.
These headphones have a warm, balanced sound that delivers a spacious soundstage when you need it and crisp detail through powerful bass. In the middle of an immersive audio mix, it provides 360 actual audio which gives amazing audio formation and it’s still impressive. For something more subdued, its sound had wonderful warmth, excellent vocal clarity paired with sparkling guitars, and a pleasant and instructive double bass that never came out soft.
As always, we tested the headphones with a mix of streaming services, file formats, and voice texts, and the Sony WH1000XM4 headphones were impressive in every way.
- Battery life has not improved this year
- 30 hours noise canceling / 38 hours without
- Fast charging (5 hours charging in just 10 minutes)
- Same or longer battery life than competitors
And while its battery life hasn’t improved this year, the 1000XM4 stretches everything as much as possible thanks to new auto on / off and play/pause sensors in headphones that can detect when music has been muted. 30 hours should be enough to get through many international flights, but you should also know that the headphones can be charged in minutes thanks to fast charging. 5 hours charging from 10 minutes to fully charged in about 3 hours.
If you want the best noise-canceling headphones, we’re sure that when it comes to decreasing background noise, you can’t do better than the Sony WH1000XM4. They are ideal for long flights due to their durability. Battery life and ANC are outstanding and well worth it for those traveling. If you want these headphones to sound better than they are, you can use the equalizer in the Sony Headphones Connect app or use a PC solution like Equalizer. APO, Roon or Voicemeeter.
